They ward off madness.. .dulling memories of awful things
I broke the rusty latch of such a place one night
To seek a shelter from October rain, though feared the loathsome sight

Antediluvian book lay open to a gruesome page
The cannibal Anzique’s butcher shop in Congo days

Footsteps on the 2nd floor above my head
Footsteps a decrepit wretch, bracing for attack I found instead
A kind old Yankee?

Queer how pictures can set a body thinking?

Cause it was his book I’d found
the picture he thought funny
The way it worked upon his mind
and teased his ache like honey
He told me killing sheep was fun
but not quite satisfyin’
A hunger for a different kind
could keep his soul from dying

They say that meat makes blood and flesh
If, “more the same” then better yet

And as we talked the storm drew on
The thunder crashed, the doors were latched
I sought escape to leave his place, he’d now grown young!

The book lay open ‘tween us
That cursed picture bled
A drip of water found it
but rain should not be red!
