Bag Lady
02:48
|
|
||
When I was 3 I sat on Santa’s knee
He said, “When you grow up, what would you like to be?”
I said, “Let me see...a bag lady
a boxcar queen
hag lady
a gutter thing”
When I was 10 I was the teacher’s friend
He sold, “You’ll grow up to be like other men”
I said, “Let me see...I know what I want to be, a bag lady
a boxcar queen
hag lady
a gutter thing”
The high school kids - they voted me
The one most likely to succeed
I said, “Let me see...a bag lady
a boxcar queen
hag lady
a gutter thing”
The unemployment clerk, he said to me,
“The only job left is to join the Navy”
I said, “Let me see...
I know I want to be : bag lady

Bogart wanted it all (so he took Bacall)
That’s the way it goes at the picture show
Three men took a wife (in real life)
Triotic sets of vows recited now
Let’s swap rings
Let’s swap things
Four live cheap as one
One quarter
Rent for boarders
Four times much as fun
Threw a ton of rice to start their new life
Twenty-Four limousines to clear the scene
Took their honeymoon the fifth of June
Bought a suite instead (two double beds)
Time to head for home (Let’s move to Rome)
We won’t get no peace from the United States police
We’ll sneak through
Customs (will you guys hide in my bag?)
Have no doubt
We’ll let you out
when we get a cab

1 2 3 4 5 are gone - all you children come along
As I tell a story now - of the Mermaid’s Crimson Bough
Two days out hit stormy seas — sailing on to Martinique
Icy windstorm howling loud - like a waiting funeral shroud
Superstitious sailor cried, “Taste the wind - tonight we die”
Ocean daemons haunting us - take us under dust to dust
Shredded sails, broken mast — end was near I prayed it fast
Ship was sinking, crew was dead - underwater, kept my head
No more air, can’t hold my breath - proudly set to swallow death
Whirlpool from below - rising towards me spinning so
Gasp for death (I was prepared) - expecting sea yet tasting air!
Where and How and What and Why - something came to save my life
When I woke I found myself - perched on underwater shelf
in a cave of riches vast - sunken treasures from the past
“Take these gifts we’ve brought for you” - the mermaid said “Your heart is true”
To the surface we’ll go now - you may ride our Crimson Bough

Providence
03:00
|
|
||
Green yellow orange blue red pick Technicolor my head
forever dizzy skyline
can’t wait to greet the sunshine
Contemporary wonder
pop music from down—under
I hear them hardly trying
I hear the muses crying
Timings’ everything in Providence
(You’ll see what I mean)
When pushed into a brick wall we’ll see who’s best of all
dragged screaming from my shell pennies fall in the wishing well
I’ve seen the worst of goodness happily sanctioned madness
I’ve run from loneliness
into the arms of cowardice

Half of Me
02:59
|
|
||
Half of me wants you gone
Half of me says not too long
Runaway...
from the lonely pain
Runaway...
will I feel the same?
Half of me can’t say goodbye
Half of me don’t want to try
Half of me wants you here
Half of me must volunteer
Runaway...
from the lonely pain
Runaway...
will I be the same?
Half of me is all alone
Half of me is still at home
Half of me is bearing fruit
Half of me wants a substitute for you
Runaway...

Queen of Hearts
03:38
|
|
||
Have you seen the Queen of Hearts?
Have you been taken apart?
Have you been lost in her lovely eyes?
Kissed by her final goodbye?
Simply to catch her smile?
Dying inside all the while for what will
never come your way
Longing to just hear her say magical
phrases and promises vows and enchantments
People I trusted would laugh and turn away
wondering how I became so lost, Queen of Hearts, Queen of Hearts
Have you loved a Queen of Hearts?
Dedicated love and art?
Just for the chance dreams may find you
Fantasy visions come true
Yet for the hours spent wondering
Reflecting what life will bring be
Will I be lonely my final days?
Longing for yesterday?
Trading my memories for cold reality?
Not True! Not True! Her memory lives on inside of me
Love for myself keeps alive - I smile, Queen of Hearts

Let Me Sleep
08:53
|
|
||
I watched my life become the dream
where every image comes to be
Witness the good and bad accrue
then wake to find they’ve all come true
I dreamt a dark catastrophe
Which then became reality
Dreamt hundreds gasped for breath
then watched them saved from certain death...
Leave the dream ill-advised
Time runs counter clockwise
Spiritually disguised
yet I’m still canonized
I walk the rain soaked garden alone
in search of magical stones
instead I find I am losing my mind...
I wander brick lined streets late at night
in search of pale moonlight
I live with doubt yet I live without...
Let me sleep alone again
tell me what you super-intend
As the leading edge patrol
gives away their last hell-hole
Let Me Sleep
Let Me Sleep
Let Me Sleep!

Head down turn ‘round
face the music face the faceless crowd
Stand straight too late
run the rat—maze, blindly concentrate
I’ve been this dream
Plotting curves on paradox machines
My time my line
sharpened to a quick cut pointed rhyme
Direct Infect
Leave the world in a disconnect
But you it’s true
Won’t do what I say you ought to do
And me I’ll be
Plotting curves on paradox machines
It’s done someone
turned the light around to face the sun
And now this town
paints graffiti on the sacred ground
We give they live
collecting squalor through a selfish sieve
But see, still me
Plotting curves on paradox machines

Gone to Seed
03:58
|
|
||
I’m gonna dig up the King - make him sing
Tell Priscilla everything’s OK!
And on a sunny day wont’cha be my teddy bear and say
Heartbreak Hotel for me
Elvis has gone to seed
So lonely I could cry
Oh Elvis, tell me why
I’m gonna call Dr Tom on the phone today
in a fit of rage I’ll make him pay!
And could he please prescribe for me one last note from Elvis P?
Heartbreak Hotel for me
Elvis has gone to seed
So lonely I could cry
Oh Elvis, tell me why
I’m gonna vote for Elvis president if actors win, why not experiment?
I’m gonna tell the Colonel what I think
“you’re a low-down Memphis money-grubbing fink!”
to take the King’s homeland and turn it to a shameless disgraceland.
Heartbreak Hotel for me
Elvis has gone to seed
So lonely I could cry
Oh Elvis, tell me why

The Gardeners Song
04:33
|
|
||
He thought he saw an Elephant,
That practised on a fife:
He looked again, and found it was
A letter from his wife.
"At length I realise," he said,
"The bitterness of Life!"
He thought he saw a Rattlesnake
That questioned him in Greek:
He looked again, and found it was
The Middle of Next Week.
"The one thing I regret," he said,
"Is that it cannot speak!"
He thought he saw a Banker's Clerk
Descending from the bus:
He looked again, and found it was
A Hippopotamus
"If this should stay to dine," he said,
"There won't be much for us!"
He thought he saw a Coach-and-Four
That stood beside his bed:
He looked again, and found it was
A Bear without a Head.
"Poor thing," he said, "poor silly thing!
It's waiting to be fed!"
He thought he saw an Albatross
That fluttered round the lamp:
He looked again, and found it was
A Penny-Postage-Stamp.
"You'd best be getting home," he said:
"The nights are very damp!"
He thought he saw a Garden-Door
That opened with a key:
He looked again, and found it was
A double Rule of Three:
"And all its mystery," he said,
"Is clear as day to me!"
Words: Lewis Carroll - 1889 excerpts from "Sylvie and Bruno"

Rabbit Sings the...
03:05
|
|
||
Early bird — I came for your word thought the rabbit instantly
Lost in line — I’ll never make it in time
Best to run in place
at least I’ll face to face
the faceless fox
that chases after me
Pass the song — I’ll help it along
Sang the rabbit carefully
Skip the verse I’ve heard this chorus is worse!

Sand and Fire
02:32
|
|
||
Ride the earthly form inside
Stay amidst your ever glowing patricide
Run the rabbit course alone
Winner of the race inscribes the resting stone
Sand and Fire
Test the wire
Rest the choir
Stake your last vampyre
Seen as if a childhood dream
Symbols reaching out resemble Halloween
Cast the stone into the pond
Break your fast impersonating Kubla Khan
“We’ve seen the last of this race I bet”
“I’ll not make my final wager yet”
“The sun has crashed into the sky”
“and sends its’ acid rays to purify”

Please Come Back
03:42
|
|
||
And as the lights spin round the table
I can see it sinking fast
Just one more artificial fable in a world
of broken glass
(I wander through your mirrored past)
and say, “Hey, have you seen an empty dream and laughed?”
The hot and swinging fought the stable
But I knew it wouldn’t last
The truce uneasy as the hate forever
drained the simulcast
(I watched you slowly walking past
as if to say, “Hey, I will fight until the last”
I took a break to lick my wounds and plan my method of attack
How could I blame the loyal confidant
Who snuck out through the back
(I could not face the maniac)
And say, “Hey, madness feels so empty, please come back”

Starve for Me
05:26
|
|
||
The misty moon comes down and swirls with the surface of the underground
I have been there
And watching as the strings entangle with the living things I follow down
as if I care
About the dim uncertain shroud that seems to smile as it hangs around
just over there…and everywhere
A fence surrounds a place of lost and lonely dreamers and unfortunates
with no escape
No matter how they wish upon a star or bargain with the silhouettes
they cannot stay
So neither here nor there while arguing the merits of this solitaire They kneel and pray
iust like yesterday
A thinning patch of light is breaking through the cloudburst Sunday shining bright
if I can see
A way around the current nightmare of a strangers stare a random fight
will not find me
Within the haze a sunshine ray can make you sad but inadvertently you starve at sea...
you starve for me!

To the Moon
06:18
|
|
||
As you walk into the mist
blinded by the life you missed
hate destroys the choice you made
As you mourn for yesterday
Floating on a spiral sea
Takes you far away from me
Unseen currents ebb and flow
Captured by the undertow
I can’t tell just where I’ll be
Mansion hail or misplaced refugee
Sliding down the mountainside
slips me up & takes me for a ride
I have walked 2 miles thru the daylight and the night for you
Late arriving can you feel me crying through the rendezvous
Time is shifting sand is sifting through my open hand it’s true
Leave the bloodshot eyes your counterplot is plotting lies for you
I can feel you near me soon
Have you sent my letter to the moon?
Midnight on the 1st of May
We could be together anyway
I’d accept an IOU
If you’d grant me one last interview
Sitting by your fireside
leaves me lost and ever mystified
I have walked into your dream converting themes to light for you
Thankless effort spent but what I meant to say and meant to do
missed the mark misplaced the bookmark miscellaneous I knew
how to say goodbye to Monday stake my claim on Waterloo
I can feel you near me soon
Have you sent my letter to the moon?
Midnight on the 1st of May
We could be together anyway
I’d accept an IOU
If you’d grant me one last interview
Sitting by your fireside
leaves me lost and ever mystified

Mount Olympus
04:19
|
|
||
If I count the days that have slipped by
Since you left your training for nearby
Barcelona booked on the red eye
I fly out to you in the night sky
Sometimes I’m convinced she’s an android
rather than a destitute negroid
Photographs of us in the tabloids
Show the world she takin’ the steroid
Sport from $29 and 95 a day
Cable TV mount Olympus you shall pay
Dressed in colors red white & blue she
Runs the fastest prison escapee
Training on the streets of the city
stealing cash she’d get away scot—free
Now she’s mine including gold medal
We’ll spend our lives together in the ghetto
If I leave our place without my stiletto
I’ll spend my life singing falsetto
Life on $29 and 95 a day
Famous for a moment only yesterday...

G.O.P.
04:16
|
|
||
Trains & busses & jets & limos
Pictures painted upon the wall
If I haven’t been round much lately
Leave a message — I will not call
Ask the mailman for my letter
(postage due won’t stop the flood)
Hurricanes & earthquake weather
Shape the party and stir the blood
I’d tell you if you were innocent
I’d tell you everything
I’d smile at your ignorance
I’d climb the G.O.P.
If our party line seems too drastic
Tough times call for leadership
We are all a wee bit fascist
Smiling from our gods pulpit
Armageddon comes tomorrow
televangelistic threat
Send your money — If you must borrow
we’ll add it to the national debt
I’d tell you if you were innocent
I’d tell you everything
I’d smile at your ignorance
I’d climb the G.O.P.
We refuse to take the blame for
car—jack plane crash politics
Unemployment fans the flame
”Our countries burning” read my lips
A thousand points of light could someone
tell me what the hell that means
Billionaires and right wing fascists
crowning George our idiot king!

Mutiny in Jonestown Washington
Influenced by classic 70's progressive rock bands like King Crimson, Van Der Graaf Generator & Genesis - along with late
60's psychedelia from The Beatles, Procol Harum & Pink Floyd (with a little 70's Black Sabbath thrown in for good measure), Mutiny in Jonestown has always sought to take these influences and synthesize them into something new.
The band has released 42 albums since 1987.
